Pain in calf muscle
This is a pain which is associated with the lower leg. ie your calf muscle. Is usually lasts a relatively short period of time and is curable. It is usually self induced and is brought on by excessive exercise or lack of proper stretching prior to exercise. Calf pain can also take the form of cramps which again are caused by not stretching the calf muscle out properly.
Calf muscle made up of three different muscles
The calf muscle is made up of three different muscles. The two heads of the gastrocnemeius and the soleus. All these muscles need to be adequately stretched both prior to and after exercise.
Symptoms of calf pain.
1. Stiffness through exercise.
2. A torn muscle.
3. Chronic venous insufficiency
4. Aching calves can be cause by Varicose veins
5. Cellulites ie inflammation of the skin or subcutaneous tissues
Causes of calf pain
1. Infective warm up if running.
2. Excessive running up steep hills.
3. Dehydration
4. Deficiencies in calcium, trace minerals and magnesium
Treatment of calf pain
The synonym RICE is ideal for treatment.
Remember
1. Rest
2. Ice
3. Compression
4. Elevation
If the pain still does not go away after a time has passed then it should be best to consult your doctor.
Calf pain in someone who is inactive can be a sign of a blood clot known as a deep vein thrombosis. If your calf becomes swollen, red or tender then consult your doctor immediately.
