Ear Pain

This is commonly known as earache is an extremely common condition particularly in children.

The most common causes of this are infection. The ear is made up of three separate parts each performing a different function. At other times the pain may feel as though it is coming from the ear but in fact may be coming from a different part of the body such as the neck or throat which are served by the same nerves as the ear.

Outer ear pain

A sore and inflamed ear, with scaly and dry skin around it, are generally problems of the outer ear. There may also be a clear watery discharge. This is a skin problem and not any problem within the ear. If you have this type of pain you will want to poke and prod inside the ear but the best treatment is to leave it alone.

There may also be a build up of wax or boils in the ear canal. Both of these will require medical attention.

A cotton bud with warm almond oil may be placed in the ear to soften wax and to help your irritated skin. Be careful not to place the cotton bud too far inside the ear canal as you may end up pressing the softened wax further into your ear.

Middle ear pain

Earache accompanied by impaired hearing usually is indicative of problems in the middle ear. This type of pain is also common when flying or climbing high altitudes. Children are more prone to this type of pain as the Eustachian tube which regulates the pressure in the middle ear is much shorter thus causing the build up of infections from the throat.

Pressure can build up behind the eardrum causing severe earache. The eardrum may burst or perorate in an attempt to relieve the pressure and thus provide relief from the pain. If this happens the eardrum can repair itself very quickly ensuring there is no long lasting damage.

How to relieve pressure in ears due to high altitude

Here are some ideas how to relieve pressure at a high altitude.

  • Chewing gum
  • Drink water or a soft drink
  • Suck on a sweetie

Inner ear pain

Due to the proximity of the inner ear to the brain, if you experience any pain, dizziness or imbalance linked to the inner ear then you should consult your GP immediately. Deafness can result with problems linked to the inner ear.

Ear pain relief

It is important to establish which part of your ear the pain is emanating from as this will affect the treatment. If there a sharp dull pain then this is probably coming from your inner ear and if nothing obvious can be seen then it is important to consult your GP who can refer you to a relevant specialist.

Ear pain when traveling

This is common in both young and old. It affects both males and females and usually occurs just after take off or prior to landing. This type of pain can be very severe however should only last until the plane is stabilized either at a specific altitude or after it has landed.

This type of pain is caused by the difference in the air pressure within the cabin and your middle ear.

It is very easy to take the following steps to ensure that this is prevented.

Take a deep breath and pinch the end of your nose, keeping you mouth closed. At the same time try to breathe out and you should hear a sound within your ears. This is you equalizing the pressure outside with that of inside your ears. This is also useful to do when swimming or diving due to the difference in pressure variations.

It is best to take some chewy or hard boiled sweets that you can suck on at the start and end of flying which will encourage swallowing. Airlines used to provide boiled sweets at this time but now no longer!

Ear and Neck Pain

Due to the proximity of the ear to the neck then pain which may be felt to emanate from the ear may infact come from the neck or head. This type of pain is called referred ear pain and is more common in the elderly.

Lyme Disease and Ear Pain

The common tick can infect humans if they bite and can cause Lyme disease. On biting into the skin the ticks can inject into the human body a numbing agent therefore some people don’t know they have been affected until a long time after. This therefore cn cause problems when seeking treatment.

This disease is becoming more common and if spotted early can be treated with a long curse of antibiotics.

There are a number of symptoms which you should look out for if you suspect you have been bitten and include coughs and shortness of breath, unexplained chills and fevers, fatigue, chest pain and palpitations, hair loss and severe ear pain. The list which should be looked at to help you establish if you have this type of condition is huge and this therefore makes the proper diagnosis very difficult. There are also a large number of differing strains of the disease and there is no common prescribed test due to this.
