How to give a good foot massage
It is essential when carrying out this task to get some of the basics right. These include:-
Set the correct mood and ambiance. This is vitally important. This usually involves lighting some aromatherapy fragranced candles and having the lighting set at a nice relaxing setting. Relaxing music can also be played which the person being massaged will enjoy. It is essential that the person is sitting in a relaxed comfortable position such as a recliner or easy chair. The use of cushions can also be used to support the persons back.
Get the basics right. For a simple foot massage a bowl of warm water, some hot towels and some massaging oil is all that is required. Some people may be allergic to fragranced oils so be sure and ask before using them. Peppermint is often used as an essential oil on the feet.
Firstly soak the feet for about ten minutes in the bowl of water. This will ensure the feet are soft and pliable and clean! When finished ensure the feet are patted dry and there are no damp areas. Rub any hard skin areas with a pumice stone or file. The massage is now ready to begin.
Reassure the person receiving the massage. The feet themselves are often ticklish and someone strange touching them may not be the most comforting. When initially beginning the massage place your hands on the feet for a few minutes to reassure and calm the person. Rub the massaging oil into your hands and then use slow, gentle strokes in order for the person to get used to your technique and from this you can build up to use firmer strokes if required.
Take one of the recipient's feet into your hands and begin by rubbing the sole of their foot with your thumbs. Work your thumbs in a circular motion all the way from the heel to the base of the toes. Begin with gentle pressure and vary this depending on the persons requirements.
Next ball the fist and use your knuckles to knead the balls and soles of the feet. Do this up and down the feet a few times.
Then place the foot on your lap and place your thumb on top of the persons foot. Use your fingers and press them into the soles of the feet again in and out all along the sole.
The toes can be difficult to massage depending on the person. They can be best massaged by manipulating them, placing your thumb and forefinger between them.
At the end of the massage run your hands up and down the tops of the feet in a nice slow relaxing motion.
Repeat with foot number two.
Ensure the feet are dry and apply baby powder if required.
