What is Athletes foot?

The correct name for athletes foot is Tinea pedis which is caused by the ringworm fungas tinea. Athletes foot is basically a skin infection in the foot caused by a growing fungus. This fungus lives in socks and clothing where the correct moist, warm damp conditions make it thrive. This infects the upper layers of the skin around the foot. This fungus can also be found in flooring hence making it easily spread from person to person by direct contact.

Symptoms include

  • Itchy and burning feet
  •
  • Peeling skin
  •
  • Cracking and bleeding
  •
  • Pain around foot and toes
  •
  • Skin can appear white and wet
  •

Bacteria can invade the feet by entering through the crack and peeling skin. When this happens a bad smell can develop which causes inflammation known as cellulitus. This is common in the elderly, those with diabetes and impaired immune symptoms.

Athletes foot is not solely found in those who undertake sport. It can be found in anyone where the conditions are ripe for the fungus to breed. It is found mainly on the soles of the feet but can also be found in between the toes and on the toenails itself.
