Gallbladder pain - Gallbladder pain symptoms

The gallbladder is a small muscular sac that is found just below the liver. The gallbladder helps the body digest your food. Most Gallbladder pain is caused by gallstones. Cancer is another reason although in most cases Gall stones are the general cause of pain.

Bile which contains waste products from the liver is stored within the gallbladder until it enters the duodenum after a meal. Gallstones happen because there is a chemical imbalance and the bile that is stored then becomes crystallized.

If you suffer acute pain in the upper part of the abdomen on the right hand side then it may be an inflammation of the gallbladder. This is commonly known as cholecystitus. This happens when gallstones that have formed become trapped at the outlet of the gallbladder into the bile duct and the flow of bile is stopped. Other symptoms apart from pain are nausea, indigestion and jaundice. In all cases such as this it is important that you seek medical advice as soon as possible.

Gallstones can remain in your system for years without causing you any serious pain or discomfort, it is only when they grow to such a size as to prevent the bile from flowing and therefore cause serious pain that they have to be removed.

Gallstones can build up and pass through your system without you noticing in many occasions. They are passed when going to the toilet.

A small operation is generally required to remove gallstones however in some extreme cases the gallbladder has to be removed.
